The Francigena Way from Siena to Orvieto

The French Path (Via Francigena) is an ancient road which led from Canterbury to Rome, crossing France, Switzerland and Italy, travelled in the past by thousands of pilgrims, following the footprint of Sigeric, archbishop of Canterbury, we went to Rome in 990 to meet the Pope. We will offer the possibility to follow the last part of this route from Tuscany to Rome in 3 stages, passing through some of the most well-known places in central Italy and to discover an incredible architectural and religious heritage. This second stage starts from Siena, located on southern Tuscany and will arrive to Orvieto. In order not to miss some wonderful Abbey and citadels, the original itinerary is diverted in some part, making the walks a little bit longer but more pleasant.

Arrival to Siena and accommodation at your hotel in the heart of the medieval town. Overnight stay in Siena.

DSC 1681Day 2: Buonconvento - Montalcino (4,30 hours hiking, +480 mt - 120 mt, 14 km)
In the morning private transfer to Buonconvento. After the visit of the old fortified village of Buonconvento, we start our walk through the hills covered up by Brunello's vineyards. We divert from the original Francigena itinerary, but the region and the village of Montalcino are too nice to be missed. Dinner and overnight stay in Montalcino. Meals (B-D)

DSC 1712Day 3: Montalcino – Castelnuovo (3,30 hours hiking, +380 mt - 320 mt,11km)
We leave Montalcino with its wide outstretched profile, interrupted every now and again by towers and belfries. The target of our walk is the St. Antimo, the most suggestive Benedictine Abbey in Tuscany built in a peaceful location. Dinner and overnight stay in the small hamlet of Castelnuovo dell'Abate. DSC 1680Day 4: Castelnuovo - Bagno Vignoni (4 hours hiking, +380 mt - 320 mt, 12 km)
Today we cross the "Crete" region crossing the beautiful Orcia river valley. We will reach the castle of Ripa d'Orcia from where we will enjoy a wonderful panorama. The arrival at the ancient thermal spring and pool of Bagno Vignoni, will take us back in the medieval time. Dinner is not included and overnight stay in the charming hamlet of Bagno Vignoni. We leave the Orcia river valley and we head south in direction of Radicofani, one of the most important strongholds in Italy for centuries. Besides the via Cassia, it controlled from a domineering position at 790 mt of altitude, the borders between Latium, Umbria and Tuscany. Dinner and overnight stay in Radicofani. Meals (B-D)

A fairly long day across a lovely countryside enjoying a beautiful panorama on the valley of Paglia river and Mt. Amiata. The last stretch climbing towards Acquapendente sign the border line between Tuscany and Latium. Private transportation to Orvieto. Dinner is not included, overnight stay in Orvieto. Meals (B)

Orvieto keeps a well-preserved medieval town center, with an impressive Cathedral, one of the most important in Italy. Spend the day discovering this lovely city. Overnight stay in Orvieto. Meals (B)
